Japan is a fascinating blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology. The Land of the Rising Sun offers unique cultural experiences and legendary hospitality.

Sights

Tokyo excites with the Sensō-ji Temple, Shibuya Crossing, Tsukiji Market and the districts of Harajuku and Akihabara. Kyoto is the cultural heart with over 2,000 temples, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and geisha districts.

Mount Fuji is Japan’s landmark and sacred mountain. Osaka tempts with Japan’s best street food. Hiroshima moves visitors with its Peace Park. Nara enchants with free-roaming deer in the city park.

Tipping

Tipping is uncommon and can even be perceived as rude. Excellent service is taken for granted. In Ryokans (traditional inns), a service charge is sometimes included. Rounding up taxi fares is acceptable, but not expected.

Traffic rules

Highway: 80-120 km/h
Rural roads: 50-60 km/h
Urban areas: 40-60 km/h
Residential areas: 30 km/h

Particularities: Left-hand traffic! Zero tolerance for alcohol (0.03 blood alcohol level). Toll roads are expensive. IC Card for public transport is more convenient than driving.

Currency & Payment

Japan uses the Yen (¥). Cash is king – many shops do not accept cards. 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards. IC Cards (Suica, Pasmo) work for trains and many shops.

重要 (Important): Japan is still very cash-focused – always have enough yen with you!
